At least 12 people sustained severe burns when a gas filling station, Trinity Gas, at Krofrom in Kumasi exploded yesterday morning.

Three of the Victims, one said to be in critical condition, were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Nine others with various degrees of injuries were sent to the Old Tafo Government Hospital in Pankrono, Kumasi where they are on admission.

About 27 cars have been burnt beyond recognition as the fire swept through a nearby car fitting shop.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service had a tough time dousing the fire, as a plume of smoke was visible several kilometres away.

At the time of filing this report, the inferno which began about 7.30 a.m had been controlled.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be established, but some eye witnesses allegedly said it was caused by a fire from a refuse dump site opposite the gas station.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO), Kwabena Nsenkyire told journalists at the scene the he was not surprised at the situation because processes were underway to close down the station which was sited among residential houses.

Some residents who interacted with the Ghanaian Times expressed concern about how their complaints to the authorities for the relocation of the station had fallen on deaf ears.

They claimed they smelt a pungent scent and raised the alarm leading many of them to flee the scene.
