The Ama Odame Okyere Foundation, a non-profit making organisation aimed at promoting good sanitation, a healthy environment and envi-ronmentally-friendly mining activities, has been launched in Accra.
The project and vision of Nana Ama Odame Okyere, second runner-up in the 2014 Ghana’s Most Beautiful contest, and Ghana’s representative of the Miss Earth World contest is to promote environmentally-friendly mining activities devoid of child labour.
Speaking at the launch Ms. Okyere said the foundation would focus on the youth as the main force to drive the quest for a healthy environment.
“I believe that the youth must be conscious of their environment; and so as a new generation, they must be educated and enlightened on issues of the environment,” it said.
She said the foundation would embark on various initiatives such as engaging heads of junior high schools and primary schools, and establishing environmental fun clubs as extra curricula activity in the schools.
“Another approach will be engaging traditional leaders, and gracing cultural events to speak with gatherings on issues of the environment,” she said.
The foundation will also embark on community outreaches to speak with the members on cultivating a good sanitation habit and a healthy environment.
She enumerated a number of activities such as the distribution of 100,000 customised exercise books to pupils in the Eastern Region, a clean-up exercise in Nkawkaw early in July, among others.
