Former Gomoa East DCE relishes position

Residents of Gomoa East in the Central Region have appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to appoint Mc Jewells J. Annan as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

They claimed Mr. Annan, a former DCE for Gomoa East under the former President John Agyekum Kufour’s administration would bring his experience to bear and help address poverty, provide basic facilities such as hospitals, schools and potable drinking water for them.

According to the residents, not only is Mr. Annan competent, but he has a good working relationship with the chiefs, elders and the people.

Making the appeal through The Ghanaian Times recently, the group said the contributions of 46-year-old former DCE to the victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 general election was commendable.

They were hopeful that his appointment would help garner more votes for the party in the 2020 elections because Mr. Annan is a seasoned politician who embraces all shades of opinion.

Relatedly, Mr. Annan told this paper in an interview that he would provide the people with vocational and technical training skills if he was appointed as the DCE.

He said he had absolute confidence in the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government to better the fortunes of the economy.

He mentioned health, educational and sports infrastructure as his main priority in the medium term, but said road construction and a fishing harbour would be considered in the long term.

Mr. Annan assured his constituents that the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) would be used judiciously.

He said special attention would be given to the more than 80 per cent of the people who were engaged in fishing, farming and petty trading.

He explained that schools would be provided with educational and teaching materials to enhance the academic performance of pupils at the basic level.

Mr. Annan appealed to President Akufo-Addo to consider setting up a fruit juice factory in the area, under the one district-one factory policy, adding that farmers would produce more fruits for the factory.

Mr. Annan, also a former parliamentary staffer had played an influential role in the victory of the NPP in the Gomoa East.

He was the Unit Commitee member of the area between 2002 and 2006.

In 2006, Mr. Annan was elected the assemblyman for the area and later appointed Area Council Chairman in 2007.

The 46-year-old was appointed as the DCE for Gomoa Fetteh in 2008 by former President Kufour.

His bid on three occasions to become the Member of Parliament for the Gomoa East Constituency was unsuccessful.

Mr. Annan holds a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Ghana in 1996.

In 2001, the former DCE obtained a postgraduate certificate in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

He later graduated with a Master of Arts in Governance and Law in 2005 from the Cape Coast University.
