Ghana’s Black Starlets kicked off their campaign at the Africa U-17 championship in Gabon on an electrifying note yesterday, by whipping the Young Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 4-0 in the second group A clash in Stade de Port Gentil.

Having been denied what was a clear penalty after a winger was pushed down violently; the Starlets maintained their composure and finally broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when striker Eric Ayiah tapped in an effective cross delivered from the right by Emmanuel Toku.

The goal gingered the Ghanaians who continued to create problems for the physically endowed Cameroonians who visited some tough tackles on the Starlets to scare them.

But the Ghanaians kept probing and scored two quick goals in a two minute blitz in the 33rd and 35th minutes through Ibrahim Sulley.

With the Cameroonians reduced to just flicking the ball out of play for a breather, Toku controlled a long pass, beat his marker and teed up Sulley to double the lead.

In a similar fashion, Sulley scored again when he connected Edmund Arko-Mensah’s delivery from the left.

Ayiah scored a stunning second for himself when he fired from an acute corner to end the route.

Earlier, hosts Gabon opened their account with a big defeat to Guinea, losing their first Group A game 5-1.

Guinea completely dominated the match and went 5-0 up before Gabon hit a consolation goal in the second half.

Group B’s opening matches will take place in Libreville today with Mali facing Tanzania and Angola taking on Niger.

The top four teams will qualify for the Under 17 FIFA World Cup in India in October which gives the teams an extra incentive to do well.
