Flavoured, Textured Condoms In High Demand

The demand for flavoured and textured condoms is on the ascendency, some pharmacy attendants have disclosed to The Ghanaian Times.

This is because flavoured condoms, which are simply condoms with great scent and taste and produced mainly to enhance oral sex rather than penetrative sex and usually with strawberry, banana, mint, vanilla and chocolate flavours while the textures among others, are dotted, smooth or ribbed are believed to enhance sexual pleasure.

Speaking with some pharmacy attendants in Tema and its surrounding communities they disclosed that before the users come to the pharmacy they already have a favourite in mind and usually would not settle for another.

At the La Famille Chemist at Kakasunanka, Chris Dela, an attendant told them that patronage of condoms has been very encouraging in recent times.

He expressed optimism that the variety in flavour and texture could not be ruled out as a major contributory factor to the high demand and revealed most of the buyers like to consistently follow a trend of taste.

At the Hem Pharma Services Limited at the Tema Community One market, Uncle Joe, who is in charge of the pharmacy, disclosed that aside the preference for a particular flavour or texture, a good number of the customers usually between 20 and 30 years like to buy specific brands.

At the Avokados Licenced Chemical store at Gbetsile, an attendant, Ms. Agnes Arthur, said many patrons preferred the vanilla and mint flavour and also those with the dotted texture as against plain latex types.

She said the sales were usually good during festive occasions and weekends and the prices range between GH¢1.50 and GH¢5.
Speaking with The Ghanaian Times in an interview some persons who admitted being regular users of condom, said the texture and flavour of the product enhances sexual sensation a great deal.

Nana Kwaku, a teacher, said  he prefered condoms with dotted textures but was stuck to strawberry flavoured kinds because his partner complains she feels nauseated when every other kind is used.

However, he said, he intended to use plain condoms without flavour soon because the later is said to be stronger and gives an assurance that no matter the pressure it would not burst.

Meanwhile, the Director General for the Ghana AIDS Commission Dr. Angela El-Adas, has told the Ghanaian Times that whether a condom is flavoured or textured, it does not make it less effective than plain latex condoms, and when used correctly and consistently it would prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and pregnancy as expected.  From Dzifa Emma Tetteh, Tema.
