Five drown after boat capsize on River Oti

Five out of 13 people drowned when the boat they were using to cross River Offin capsized.

Heavy rains that hit part of Ashanti Region on Friday caused the river to overflow its banks.

Some inhabitants claimed the victims were farmers but others believed they were illegal miners popularly called galamsey operators.

One of the dead bodies was retrieved, but yet to be identified as it had been deposited at the Nyinahin hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Meanwhile, seven others, managed to swim to safety.

The incident took place at Amaada, near Nkrumah Nkwanta, in the Atwima Mponua district of Ashanti at about 5:00pm on Saturday.

Mr. Williams Darko, district chief executive and some executives of the New Patriotic Party visited the scene.

He pledged the assembly’s determination to assist to retrieve the bodies.
