Fishermen praise govt for increase in premix supply

President Mahama..... (2)The Chief Fisherman of Cape Coast, Nana Kojo Bo, has commended the government for the constant and regular supply of premix fuel to fishermen in the country in recent times.

He said the current rate at which premix fuel was being supplied to fishermen has brought great relief to them as well enhancing the fishing industry in the country.

Nana Bo made the observation at the Cape Coast beach during the inauguration of the Abrofo-Mpoano Landing Beach Committee by the National Premix Fuel Committee.

He said by that singular act of continuing to subsidise and ensuring the free flow of premix fuel to the fishermen, in addition to subsidising the cost of outboard motors, the government has demonstrated its commitment to the welfare of the ordinary people in the country.

Nana Bo also extended the gratitude of the artisanal fishers to the National Premix Fuel Committee for having introduced measures to ensure the smooth delivery and lifting of premix fuel to the Landing Beach Committees.

Inaugurating the Abrofo-Mpoano Landing Beach Committee, Mr. Kweku Sersah-Johnson, chairman of the National Premix Fuel Committee, said the contribution of the artisanal fishers to the economy of Ghana was significant, apart from providing jobs and sustenance to over three million citizens.

He said the other good side of  government’s decision to subsidise the premix fuel was that the margins derived from the sales were to be used for community development for which many of the Landing Beach Committees have used in constructing schools, clinics, community centre and sheds, etc.

Mr. Sersah-Johnson disclosed that the Premix Fuel Committee has embarked on a campaign to educate the fishermen and women on issues to do with safety and legal fishing practices to ensure that the lives of fishermen are protected at all times both on land and on the sea, rivers and lakes as well as the future of the trade.

The chairman said on the direct instructions of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the Premix Committee has increased the supply of the product to the fishers as they enter the major fishing season and praised other stakeholder institutions like the Tema Oil Refinery, the National Petroleum Authority and VIHAMA company for working round the clock to ensure the availability of premix fuel.
