Fisherman jailed 15 years for robbing KNUST students

A fisherman, who robbed two students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, was yesterday convicted and jailed 15 years imprisonment in hard labour by the Accra Circuit Court “One”.

The convict, Kwame Asong, a resident of Ashiyie near Kokrobite in the Greater Accra Region, attacked Onesimus Aka and Juliet Gyimah (students), with a beer bottle at about 6:20 pm in July 10, 2016, when they were returning from the Ashiyie Beach to the roadside to board a vehicle.

Asong together with two accomplices subjected the students to severe beatings and finally robbed them of their two HTC mobile, costing GH¢70.00, a backpack valued GH¢250.00, a purse valued GH¢30.00, and GH¢250.00 cash and ran away.

The prosecutor Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuaruka, said that the students raised the alarm and with the assistance of other merry makers at the beach, Asong was arrested, but the accomplices escaped.

Chief Supt Ttuaruka said that investigations led to the retrieval of the items.

Passing sentence, Mr. Tandoh said that the convict would not have fallen into trouble if he had concentrated on his work as a fisherman.

He said it was about time society became safe without any criminals whose activities were dangerous and threatened human lives.
