The Tano North District Assembly building at Duayaw Nkwanta, in the Brong-Ahafo Region, has been gutted by fire destroying property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
The offices of the Electoral Commission, Town and Country Planning, Stool Lands, National Service Secretariat, Environmental Health Service and Lands Commission were affected in the fire which occurred on Sunday, at about 3 p.m.
Briefing The Ghanaian Times, the Acting Regional Operations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Divisional Fire officer Grade One Ignatius N. Noekor, said some criminals took advantage of the situation to loot items such as motorbikes, Wellington boots and office equipment.
He said 15 generators belonging to the Electoral Commission, photocopiers and stationery were among items destroyed in the fire.
Mr. Noekor said investigations into the incident were yet to establish the cause of fire, adding that the affected offices were partitioned with plywood.
He said an eyewitness who informed the Fire Service said he saw smoke from one of the offices, but could not tell the source.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Samuel Offei Adade, said at the time the fire personnel got to the scene, much of the evidence needed for their investigation had been compromised, making it difficult to establish the cause of the incident.
