Fire guts part of Walewale Govt Hospital

Fire yesterday guttered parts of the Walewale Government Hospital in the West Mamprusi district of the Northern Region.

The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Fire Service, Mr. Collins Opoku Aikins, confirmed this to the Ghanaian Times in an interview.

He said the fire which started about 9am destroyed drugs in the storeroom of the hospital valued at several hundreds of Ghana cedis.

The PRO added that some other stationery at the hospital were destroyed in course of the fire.

Mr. Aikins stated that the fire personnel responded promptly to the distress call placed to the headquarters and said no death or injury was recorded in the fire.

Mr. Aikins said the course of fire has not yet been established as the officers were still conducting investigations.

An eyewitness, Mr. Peter Wuni in a telephone interview with the Ghanaian Times said the fire caused fear and panic within the premises of the hospital.

He said many people took to their heels in an attempt to escape from the blazing fire.

Mr. Wuni said but for the timely intervention of the Fire Service personnel the fire would have caused much bigger havoc.
