Five people have been arrested by the police for selling fake olive oil on the market.
The suspects are in the custody of the police assisting in investigations.
A statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Foods and Drugs Authority (FDA), Mr. Hudu Moftari, mentioned the fake brands as Pinno Olive Oil by Mfred Co Limited, Kazmor Olive Oil by Kazmor Ventures, Quality Olive and Holy Oil.
He said as part of its Post Market Surveillance activities the FDA collected samples of olive oil on the market and the analysis conducted at the FDA laboratory indicated that some brands were not olive oil as indicated on the label.
Mr Mogtari stated that further checks by the FDA revealed that some of the culprits submitted original olive oil to the FDA for registration and after approval they replaced the oil with fake oil and sold them to unsuspecting consumers.
He said the FDA was committed to promoting health and safety and appealed to the public to give any information on any practice which has the possibility of endangering health and safety, through any of the following contacts; 0244337235, 0244337249, 0244563764, 0244655943 or on the toll free line 0800151000.
