Farmer shoots wife, commits suicide

Joseph Yaw Owusu, a 70-year-old farmer at Atronie near Sunyani has shot himself to death, after shooting his 20-year-old wife.

The wife, Faustina Meadabor, who survived, and the farmer’s seven-year-old son, who was injured by the pellets from the gun, are receiving treatment at the Sunyani Regional Hospital.

The reason for Owusu’s action is unknown.

Superintendent Alhaji Maama Arhin, the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Crime Officer, told The Ghanaian Times yesterday that Faustina went into the marriage with a three-year-old son, while the deceased also had a seven year-old-son living with him.

He said the incident took place in their home on Sunday evening, but could not confirm whether there was a misunderstanding between the couple or not.

Supt. Arhin said the deceased was found dead in a pool of blood, while the wife and the son were rushed to the hospital for treatment, while an empty cartridge was found at the scene.
