Farm labourer arrested for murdering wife

The Sefwi Debiso Police in the Western Region, have arrested a 40-year-old farm labourer, for allegedly butchering his wife, Afia Boye, at Camp Six Cottage, Sefwi Henenkwanta.

After committing the crime, Yao Daana, is said to have fled and stayed in the bush for 24 hours. However, he finally surrendered to his in-laws in the village, who handed him over to the police.

Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Daniel Wiafe, the Sefwi Debiso Police Commander, confirmed the incident to The Ghanaian Times and disclosed, Daana was arrested last Tuesday.

He said Daana, and others were arraigned before the Sefwi Debiso Magistrate Court last Thursday and remanded in police custody, to appear again on January 22. Their pleas were not taken.

Yao, alias Alhaji, killed his wife, Afia, with whom he has six children, on Monday, January 5, on the suspicion that, she was flirting, with another man.

The couple, who are both farm labourers, have been working on cocoa farms at the Camp for about 10 years.

ASP Wiafe, briefing The Ghanaian Times, earlier, said the couple picked up quarrel recently, over Afia’s infidelity.

He said last Monday, Afia decided to attend   a funeral at Sefwi Yawmatwa, but Yao, who was suspicious of his wife’s intention, tried to stop her   from leaving the house.

That, he said, resulted in heated exchanges during which, Yao entered his room, picked a cutlass and attacked Afia, inflicting deep cuts on her body.

“As the deceased tried to block the machete, she got her right hand almost chopped off,”ASP Wiafe said.

One of their sons, raised the alarm which attracted neighbours who found   Afia lying in a pool of blood, while Yao fled the scene.

She was rushed to the Sefwi Essam Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
