More than 20 Presidents and Heads of State and government, friends and well-wishers from across the globe, including the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, are expected to join Ghanaians to bid a befitting farewell to one of the greatest sons of the soil, Kofi Annan.

Ghanaians began to mourn the celebrated son the Almighty God has given to this country.  His legacy will forever remain with us!

Indeed, he is a larger than life persona due to his work for humanity and has carved a niche for himself, as a global icon in international relations and diplomacy.

To all those who are trooping to mourn him, they are doing so because of his legacy as the first UN staff to have worked diligently and dedicatedly in order to rise through the ranks to occupy the apex office. And also being the first Black African, from sub-Sahara Africa to become the Secretary General of the global body.

Years after he stepped down after successfully serving two five-year terms as Secretary General of the UN (1997-2006), he continued to work with governments and the private sectors across the globe to bring smiles to the face of humanity.

The Ghanaian Times recall that when he was stepping down after completing his tenure of office, he profoundly said, it was not easy to say good bye. Today, and few years down the lane, we are in his shoes and finding it extremely difficult to accept the fact that he is no more.

Fact is he left the continent, specifically Zimbabwe, healthy and energetic; only for us to hear about his death far away in Switzerland after a short illness. How can death be so cruel to lay its cold icy hands on the man we were expecting back home.

We are consoled, however, that the late Kofi Annan touched so many people around the world during his lifetime and that accounts for the multitude that have gathered in Accra to mourn him.

We are glad also that the government in collaboration with the global community has honoured him with a state burial befitting a global icon.

More appropriately, the funeral has also offered the opportunity for the world to pay its respect, and render appreciation and acknowledgement to the man whose good and kind work touched all humanity.

The outpouring of grief at his death over the last few weeks is overwhelming and comforting. It is our hope and belief that the good Lord would grant his soul an eternal, peaceful resting place.

The world would miss the gentle soul of Kofi Annan; The man whose popularity and kindness is acknowledged widely and fondly remembered for his humility, kindness, decency in speech, ability to calm down tempers as well as show love to all.

Indeed, he devoted his life through dedicated service to mankind to ensure that the world is a better place.

For us, he is irreplaceable and we join the entire world community to celebrate the world’s icon and ask for a special place for him in the Lord’s bosom.

Undoubtedly, his work and demeanour would be missed not only by his family but colleagues in the UN system as well as the entire world. The late Kofi Annan has left an indelible mark that in serving humanity; we should serve and serve with humility!

Fare the well!
