Fake spiritualist granted bail

The suspect – Maxwell Kpobi

The suspect – Maxwell Kpobi

The self-styled spiritual healer, Maxwell Kpobi, who allegedly lured a nurse he met on the the street, into a hotel room and had sex with her there, under the pretext of delivering her from a spiritual marriage, has been granted a police enquiry bail.

However, he may get away with the offence as attempts by the police to prosecute him are being frustrated by the victim’s reluctance to come forward to pursue the case.

Kpobi now reports to the police twice in a week, but his victim was no longer showing interest in the case for fear of being stigmatised, said a police spokesman.

Kpobi was said to have approached the unsuspecting nurse on the street and told her that she needed to be delivered promptly from the spiritual marriage otherwise she would never have a husband.

Worse still, he was said to have demanded an amount of GH¢300 from his victim after the sex act and also asked her to come back with her underpants for him to pray over to cast away her spiritual husband.

The nurse obliged and gave him the money and also brought him the items.

But she later came back to her senses and reported the matter to the police.

After his arrest, the suspect was identified by two policemen he had defrauded earlier, by asking them to make a payment onto his cellular phone for bigger favours from him in return.

The suspect also allegedly posed as a chief some time ago, and succeeded in defrauding people.

According to the police spokesman, when Kpobi met the young nurse on the street that Sunday, he told her that the spiritual marriage was responsible for her status as single woman, and offered to assist her to come out of that situation.

When the nurse asked for a date to come and meet him for that purpose, Kpobi said that they could rather check into a hotel which he pointed at along the street, for the spiritual rituals.

While in the hotel room, Kpobi asked the woman to lift up her dress for the rituals to start and she obliged.

There and then the suspect inserted his fingers into the private part of the helpless woman and then pushed her onto the bed to have sex with her.

Kpobi is said to have admitted the offences in his investigative caution statement.

The police said that vigorous efforts were being made to convince the young nurse that her identity would neither be disclosed by the police nor the media to the public.
