Fake soldier arrested in Tamale

Police in the Tamale metropolis of the Northern Region yesterday arrested a fake soldier.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mohammed Yussif Tanko, who briefed the media on Tuesday, gave the name of the suspect as Issah Mubarik.

He stated that Mubarik was parading himself as a military officer stationed at 6th Battalion in Tamale.

ASP Tanko said the fake soldier was harassing residents at the outskirts of Tamale.

ASP Tanko explained that the fake soldier, who was dressed in military uniform, arrested somebody he suspected to have stolen his motorcycle, and handed him over to the police.

He said the police arrested Mubarik after realising that he was a fake soldier.

ASP Tanko said when the police conducted a search in Mubarik’s room at Dungu, outskirts of Tamale, two sets of military uniforms, one pair of military trousers, two military pullovers, two military vest, one military combat boot, one military cup and pair of gloves were found.

He said two 9mm ammunitions,and a rubber stamp belonging to the Forces Pay Regiment, Burma Camp, Accra, were also retrieved from the fake soldier.

ASP Tanko said all the military uniforms found were bearing the name A. Mubari, adding that the suspect told the police that the military uniforms and other items found on him belonged to his late grandfather.

He cautioned the public from parading themselves as security personnel because it constituted a serious crime.
