Fake policeman, another arrested for assault, robbery

The police have arrested a fake policeman who has been terrorising residents of Anyaa and its environs.

Michael K. Asare, 29, was arrested after his accomplice, Ernest Baah, 39 assaulted and snatched a bag containing GH¢2,000 from his victim and escaped to Asare’s house to seek refuge.

Confirming the incident, Accra Regional Police Public Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Efia Tenge, said Asare and Baah were friends and live in the community.

She said on January 23, Baah told Asare to “arrest” someone who had insulted him(Baah) at Joma at Anyaa.

She said, Asare and Baah went to Joma, assaulted the victim(name withheld) and forced him into a taxi, adding that some residents resisted and demanded the release of the victim, but Asare told them he was a police officer.

To prove that he is a police officer, ASP Tenge said, Asare showed them a fake police identity card.

She said residents called the police information room and narrated the incident to the police, adding that Asare and Baah were terrorising the area.

She said a police patrol team was dispatched to the scene to maintain law and order.

ASP Tenge said upon interrogation, it was revealed that Asare was not a genuine policeman.

She said a search conducted in his room revealed a helmet and two police uniforms.

She said when Asare was questioned how he came by the items, he told the police that he was once a Community Policing Assistant (CPA).

ASP Tenge said both Asare and Baah were assisting the police in investigations.
