Evangelist remanded for possessing ‘wee’

Court-logoA 20-year-old evangelist was remanded in police custody by an Accra Circuit Court last Thursday for possessing dried leaves believed to be “wee” (Indian hemp).

Kwabena Yeboah who preaches in buses and at lorry stations was arrested by an Immigration officer when the (accused) attempted to open the bag of a school girl sitting beside him in a commercial vehicle (trotro) from Lapaz to Kaneshie, all suburbs of Accra, on February 26, 2018.

But when the accused was taken to the Kaneshie Police Station charge office and searched, a black polythene bag containing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found on him.

The prosecutor, Superintendent Kwaku Bempah told the court presided by Mr Aboagye Tandoh that the accused claimed ownership of the narcotic drug (‘wee”) and emphatically told the police in his cautioned statement that “he smokes it and its energises him to preach for a long period and also makes him bold and eloquent.”

Kwabena who looked worried and confused, suddenly removed his sandals in the courtroom and decided to walk bare footed into the dock when the case was called by the court clerk but a policeman asked him to put them on.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of using narcotic drug without authority and was remanded until March 15, 2018, by which time the report on the dried leaves would have been brought from the Police Forensic Laboratory and submitted to the court.

Supt. Bempah said that the evangelist boarded a “trotro” from Lapaz to Kaneshie and start preaching the word of God as usual.

He said that the accused, after preaching, sat between the Immigration officer, Mr Patrick Fiifi Asare, and a school girl who was dozing.

The prosecutor said that Kwabena who also bowed his head and pretended to be dozing, placed his hands on the school girl’s bag and tried to open the zip but Mr Asare (complainant) who saw  the action became alert and arrested him.

He said that the accused pleaded to be forgiven but he was brought to the Kaneshie Police Station and the “wee” was found on him during a body search.
