Energy, Natural Resources Varsity Seeks Land C’ssion Collaboration … to reclaim depleted forest land cover

The University of Energy and Natural Resources at Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo Region has advocated a collaboration between it and the Forestry Commission for the reclamation of the country’s depleted forest land cover.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university  Professor (Mrs) Esi Awuah,  who made the call said the university has been  nursing both indigenous and exotic seedling species, adding that  it had the capacity to produce the needed seedlings for plantation, hence the call on the Forestry Commission to open up for collaboration.

Mrs Awuah was speaking at a meeting here last Thursday with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forestry as part of a tour to the university.

She explained that what the university needed was the release by the Forestry Commission so that about one million seedlings it has at its nursery could be planted.

The University she said would provide the needed manpower and stressed that students of the university would use the planting of the seedlings especially during vacation, as part of their practical and project work.

Touching on other issues, the Vice Chancellor said due  to the lack of funds many  on going infrastructural projects being embarked upon by the university could not be completed, and appealed to the government and other corporate institutions  to go to the  aid of the university.

She mentioned a six unit classroom block, lecture theatres and staff residential accommodation as some of the current projects being undertaken by the university.

She also appealed to the Lands Commission and the government to help register the university lands released by the chiefs for the establishment of other campuses of the university, saying the process of the land title registration had been difficult.

She said the university had 2000-acres of land at Nsoatre, Dormaa Ahenkro, and Mim among others and called for the need to secure them from encroachers. From Daniel Dzirasah, Sunyani
