Elites Urged To Vie For Local Elections

Mr Julius Debrah,Minister of Local Government and Rural Delopment.Photo.Ebo Gorman (1)The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Julius Debrah, has urged professionals to contest in the up coming District elections in order to impart their expertise in level development.

He said, ”one of the reasons the country has a decentralised governance system was to ensure that we have competent people at all levels of the decision making process”.

Mr. Debrah said however unfortunately elite class had shy away from district level elections, saying this has affected the quality of development at the local level.

He made the appeal after visiting some registration centres in Tema. Also on the tour were the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo and the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Mr. Isaac Ashai Odamtten. registration of

The places visited were the Star Basic School registration centre at Community 5, Mount Zion Methodist Primary School at Community 3 and Adjetey Ansah Basic School at Tema Manhean.

Mr. Debrah noted that the district level election formed a very important aspect of the country’s governance process because it was at the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies that development projects are initiated.

He called on traditional leaders to eschew chieftaincy disputes so that jurisdictions could attract investors.

“Peace is a requisite for development we should therefore iron out our differences and plan our development so that we can be supported to achieve results,” he said.
