Education Director unhappy about teachers joining Assemblies

The Bawku West District Director of Education, Madam Patricia Ayikor, has expressed concern over the election of teachers into District Assemblies, saying they would be missing classes and reducing contact hours with pupils.

Madam Ayikor, who chaired the inaugural ceremony of the Bawku West Assembly Members, at Zebilla, expressed her displeasure about the situation but entreated the teachers not to concentrate too much on their duties as assembly members at the expense of their students and pupils.

The director also charged the Assembly members to ensure that girls in the district were not engaged in child labour, as it was currently happening at the gold mining areas and on people’s farms.

She said poor school attendance accounted for the low female human resource in the district, citing the absence of a female among the 34 elected Assembly Members, as evidence of the worrying trend.
