Driver’s mate remanded for robbing 2 UPS students

An Accra circuit court on Tuesday remanded Mawuli Dzikum, a driver’s mate, for allegedly robbing two students of the University of Professional Studies (UPS), Accra.

Dzikum, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, would reappear on Tuesday, March 26, for the court to rule on a bail application.

The lawyer for accused had prayed for bail for his client, but the prosecution objected to it, saying, accused had earlier told police that he has no fixed place of abode.

Prosecuting, Inspector Samuel Ahiabor had told the court presided by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, that the complainants in the case were students who reside at Dumelo Hostel, located in Madina.

He said on September 15, 2018 at about 1am, the complainants were in their hostel watching a movie, when accused armed with a long screw driver, forcibly entered their room and threatened to harm them if they raise alarm.

Insp Ahiabor said accused robbed the students of their two laptop computers, three mobile phones and GH¢ 29.00.

He said accused also transferred GH¢ 170.00 from one of the complainant’s mobile money into his account in her presence.

Insp Ahiabor indicated that after the crime, accused locked the victims in their washrooms and bolted.

The court heard that preliminary investigations conducted at the MTN Office revealed that accused transferred the money into his mobile wallet.

Insp Ahiabor said further investigations led to the arrest of the accused, who was later identified by the complainants as the one who robbed them. – GNA
