The Accra Circuit Court “One” has sentenced a driver’s mate to 17 years in prison for robbing a woman of her mobile phone, and inflicting cutlass wounds on her at Madina, Accra.
The convict, Asamoah Sitsofe, attacked Ms. Belinda Quashie, an event planner, on December 13, 2015, at about 10:30pm when she came out from the Ashanti Home Touch Restaurant near the Madina lorry station to receive a call.
Sitsofe cut the victim’s right wrist with a cutlass and snatched her Nokia mobile phone valued at GH¢150.00 from her, and sold it at GH¢30.00.
The police arrested convict in a “ghetto” after receiving a complaint from the victim, and he (Sitsofe) admitted the offence in his cautioned statement.
The convict pleaded with the court for leniency, but the judge, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, said that the act was robbery with violence, which demanded a harsher sentence.
“Not only was the accused armed with a sharp object, but also inflicted a deep cut on her hand. It, therefore, stands to reason that his denial was an afterthought because he wants to escape from punishment,” Mr. Tandoh said, before sentencing.
Superintendent Kwaku Bempah told the court that the complainant (Belinda) attended a party at afriend’s party at the Ashanti Home Touch Restaurant and had a call, and went outside to answer the call.
He said that while answering the call, the convict snatched the phone from the complainant and inflicted a deep cutlass wound on her right wrist.
According to the prosecutor, a Good Samaritan rushed the victim to a nearby clinic, but she was later referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for plastic surgery.
He said that Sitsofe admitted committing the offence when he was arrested and told the investigators that he sold the mobile phone for GH¢30.00.
