‘Dr Bawumia Must Back Comments With Figures’

bawumiaThe Peoples Forum, a civil society group has asked Dr Mahamadu Bawumia to back his comment on the country inflation with fact instead of throwing dust into the eyes of Ghanaians.

It said the recent allegation made by the running mate of the 2012 Presidential Candidate of New Patriotic Party (NPP) must be based on solid facts, truths and realities.

Dr Bawumia, a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG)recently criticized the credibility of the inflations figures released by the BoG and the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) as “cooked and misrepresentation”

The two institutions refuted the allegations, saying that the inflation figures were calculated with international acceptance standard.

But at a press conference yesterday in Accra, a leading member of the People’ Forum, Mr Clement Amole said the allegations tarnished the integrity of the institutions and that the former deputy governor should defend his comments with credible facts or retract his statement.

He noted that since he (Dr Bawumia) had worked as a deputy Governor at the Central Bank such allegations must be taken seriously by Ghanaians.

“We are asking Dr Bawumia to back his comment by openly telling Ghanaians the method used in calculating the inflation figures when he was working as a deputy governor at the Central bank.

“Because We are at a loss as to whether he speaks as an economists or the politician we know him to be, due to the fact that his comments appear to be mostly designed to create panic in the foreign exchange market,” he opined.

Mr Amole noted that although, two state institutions have debunked the allegation, government should take steps against individuals who attack public institutions for their personal gains.

A spokesperson for the forum, Spencer Quaye noted that the group would invite Dr Bawumia and the two institutions for a roundtable discussion.

He explained that the aim is for them to tell Ghanaians true state of the economy.

“We find it very compelling to bring Dr Bawumia, the BoG and the GSS on one common platform to critically analyze the economic situations in relation to his assertions, for that fact that he was former public official who may have access to certain confidential information,” he said.
