Doctor to testify as 4th witness in sodomy case

The fourth prosecution witness in the sodomy case involving Dr. Sulley Ali Gabass, a medical practitioner, will on Monday testify before an Accra Circuit Court.

The witness, a medical doctor at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, could not appear in court yesterday as ordered by judge, Mrs Rita Agyemang-Budu.

According the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Idan Dery, the victim having been taken ill as a result of the alleged sodomy by Dr. Gabass, was sent to the Ahmadiyya Mission Hospital in Agona Swedru, and later transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, when his condition deteriorated.

At Korle –Bu, anal fistula and anal rectal abscess surgical operations were performed on him and it was during the session that he was diagnosed as HIV positive, and consequently mentioned Dr. Gabass as the one responsible for his ailment.

The publication of the story by Joy fm’s Manasseh Awuni Azure, led to the arrest of Dr. Gabass by the Ghana Police.

The sodomised victim and Manasseh Awuni Azure, who first published the story leading to the arrest of the accused and subsequent prosecution in court, have already given their evidence as first and second prosecution witnesses respectively in the court.

Earlier, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Idan Derry prosecuting, told the court that the accused between October 2013 and April 2014, sodomised the teenager five times at Kasoa in the Central Region and Alajo in Accra.

He said the victim is a student who lives at Kasoa while Dr. Gabass is a medical practitioner at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi.

Dr. Gabass, according to the prosecutor, encountered the victim on Facebook in September 2013, and they became friends and later established contacts on phone and online.

The court heard that in October 2013, Dr. Gabass arranged and met the victim at the Kasoa New Market area and had anal sex with him in his car in-front of a bank.

On December 28, 2013, at about 7 p.m., the accused again met the victim at Kasoa and had sex with him after which he gave him a Samsung Galaxy phone and GH¢20 which the teenager initially turned down, but was coerced to accept later on.

Thereafter, the victim fell ill and informed the accused who prescribed paracetamol for him.

The accused is still in prison custody.
