The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji A. B. A. Fuseini, has expressed worry that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region, were over relying on the District Assemblies Common Fund for development.
He noted that many of the assemblies in the area were performing poorly in the generation of Internally Generated Funds (IGF).
Alhaji Fuseini, who was speaking at the first meeting of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), at Tamale at the weekend, mentioned that only few of assemblies in the area were able to meet their revenue target for the 2015 financial year.
He lamented that “For the 2016 year, the 26 MMDAs of the region are collectively expected to collect a little over GH¢15 million, but as at the end of the first quarter, all MMDAs managed to collect only a little over GH¢2 million,” which represented 14 per cent of the estimated amount to be collected for the quarter.
Alhaji Fuseni asked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the area “to wake up from their long slumber and come out with the necessary measures to realise their revenue targets.
He stressed “The fact of the matter is that many of the MMDCEs are still sleeping on the job. I want to urge MMDCEs of assemblies that are not doing well to step up efforts to enhance their IGF collection, I do not have to remind you that the quantum you collect have implications on your share of the Common Fund.”.
Alhaji Fuseini urged MMDCEs to work hard and complete all uncompleted projects in their respective areas.
He said reports indicated that some mandatory projects in some areas were far behind schedule, adding that it was imperative for the MMDCEs to speed up work on such projects.
“Recent monitoring team from the Assemblies Common Fund Secretariat was in the region, and some of the reports we have received are not encouraging, let me make a passionate appeal to the districts behind schedule to speed up work on these mandatory projects to enhance our service delivery,” Alhaji Fuseini stressed
He entreated the MMDCEs to ensure peace and stability in their areas to facilitate development.
The Nanumba North District Chief Executive, Alhaji Seidu Iddi on behalf of his colleagues, pledged to improve upon the generation of the IGF.
