Delta Force 13 now charged with rioting

The 13 suspects of the “Delta Force,” a  vigilante group of the new Patriotic Party  (NPP ),who were facing trial for allegedly assaulting a public officer, appeared  before a circuit court here on Tuesday  with a new charge of rioting, after several adjournments.

This followed the withdrawal of the earlier charges by the Attorney General’s Department.

Earlier the 13 were accused of assaulting a public officer, conspiracy to assault and causing unlawful damage.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Okyere Darko, prosecuting told the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) court, that the Attorney General had withdrawn all earlier charges against them.

He told the court that the suspects have been charged for rioting, and the court, presided over by Ms. Mary Nsenkyire, consequently struck out the earlier charges.

Lawyer Matthew Appiah, had to secure a bail for them since they were re- arrested.

There was heavy security presence when they were brought to the court.

Speaking to the media, he said he was not happy with the turn of events but maintained that his clients were innocent.

“The difficulty we have is that, it was clear that the police should have done the right thing. If they had initially prepared the docket to the Attorney General’s Department for advice, all these back and forth would not have happened. Now we are securing a bail for them but I still maintain that my clients are innocent,” he stated.

It is recalled that a group of well-built members of Delta Force stormed the Regional Coordinating Council and forcibly ejected from office, the Regional Security Capo, because he is not a native of the Ashanti Region.

It took the timely intervention of the police to save the situation to restore law and order.

The angry men had earlier destroyed some office equipment in their bid to drive out the man.

Their action was condemned by a large section of the public who called for their arrest.

Less than 24 hours after the act, the leader of the group Kwadwo Bamba was arrested by the Police.

Other members were subsequently arrested and charged for the offence of conspiracy to assault and assaulting a public officer and causing unlawful damage.
