CURRENT McDan Open Champion, George Darko, put up another spirited display to win the Ghana Tennis Federation’s (GTF) Third National Ranking Tournament which ended at the Adabraka Tennis Club (ATC) on Saturday.
Darko lived up to his favourite billing, defeating Benjamin Fumi in two straight set of 6-1, 6-1.
It was his third after winning the first two editions.
Darko booked his place in the finals after a difficult semi final game with Isaac Titriku.
For the first time in the week-long tournament, Darko was stretched to his elastic limit until he silenced Titriku 7-5, 4-6 and 6-1.
Fumi, on the other hand, defeated Quartey 7-5, 6-4 in another thrilling semi- final encounter.
But Darko showed his class in the final, giving Fumi little chance to settle and breaking him severally in the two sets to maintain his position on the top.
Francisca Nyarko also established her superiority over Kate Coleman with two straight sets victory of 6-4, 6-3 to rule the women division.
Nyarko’s successful defence of the 2015 McDan trophy seems to have shot her confidence up, and that was evident in her play as she dominated and dictated the pace for the former female champion.
Both players booked final places after remarkable displays in the semis.
Nyarko humbled Annette Cruickshank in a thrilling first set stretching to 7-5. But the champion changed her game to make mince meat of Cruickshank, crushing her 6-1.
The other female semi-final game was a one sided one that saw Coleman win 6-0, 6-1.
