Dan Botwe Urges End Of Speculation

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Member of Parliament for Okre Constituency and leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Botwe, has called for an immediate end to speculations and debate over who becomes the flag-bearer of the NPP in the 2016 presidential election.

In an interview with The Ghanaian Times, he said the debate over who leads the party in the 2016 election barely a week after the end of the 2012 presidential election petition at the Supreme Court was “unhealthy and totally premature”.

Mr. Botwe said “the timing for the debate was wrong and. I urged members of the party to desist from engaging in such debates in the media”.

According to him, the party, per its constitution, was supposed to go for a national congress to elect its flagbearer two years ahead of an election when it was in opposition.

He, therefore entreated members who had began campaigning for certain personalities to be elected to lead the party in 2016 to wait till the time was due for the party to organise its congress before they engage in such debates.

Mr. Botwe explained that the “NPP pride itself as being the most democratic political party in the country” and urged members “to follow the provisions of the party’s constitution and wait till the executives opened nominations for the election of a flagbearer”.

“Our constitution states that when we are in power, we elect a flagbearer a year before the general election but when we are in opposition, we elect our flagbearer two years before the general election. At the moment, we have more than a year to elect a flagbearer so these debates must stop,” he said.

Mr. Botwe indicated that the party was currently in the process of rebuilding its structures to enable it win power in 2016 and advised members to focus their energies on assessing what went wrong in the previous election and come out with solutions on how it could improve its fortunes in the next election.

“The National Executive Committee of the party is yet to roll out a programme for the election of executives from the polling station level up to the national level. We are also organising a SWOT analyses to enable us come out stronger in the next election,” he noted.

He said the party had a lot of activities before it organises its congress to elect a flagbearer for the 2016 election and admonished members of the party, especially those who had began campaigning for certain personalities, to be elected as flagbearers, to put an end to that. – Yaw Kyei
