CPP urges govt to curb alarming corruption rate

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has urged the government to accelerate measures to curb the alarming rate of corruption in state institutions, including the Office of the President.

“The 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index report by Transparency International, which scored Ghana as the 78th least corrupt country out of 180 others, is an indication that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have failed in dealing with the issue,” it said.

This was contained in a statement signed and issued by Abdul Malik Jeleel, the Chairman of the Communications Team of the CPP.

It said the NPP and NDC lacked the governance capacity to fight corruption because of the continuous politicisation of the canker, which the party makes difficult to prosecute high public officials.

“In the view of the CPP, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, which relates to the prosecution of both public and private individuals who engage in corrupt practices shares in the mandate of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which exists as a specialised agency to monitor and investigate economic and organised crime.

“In that regard, the party calls on the government to strengthen EOCO by providing the institution with adequate resources to enable it to effectively and efficiently deliver on its mandate and also elevate EOCO to be able to prosecute corrupt officials rather than duplicating institutions.

“The party however, commended EOCO for recovering monies paid to businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome and appealed to civil society organisations, the media, traditional authorities and religious leaders to lead the advocacy and play a watchdog role in ensuring the independence of EOCO,” the statement said. -abcnewsgh.com
