Constable Emmanuel Sarpong, stationed at the Suame Police Station with the Visibility Unit, joined the Police Service in 2010.
He has also been charged with stealing and would appear before court for prosecution.
.Meanwhile, the Head of the Visibility Unit, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Bernard Twum Barimah, has been removed for lack of supervision, in connection with the matter.
Briefing newsmen here yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ampofo Duku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, described the incident as very unfortunate.
“The IGP has ordered that he should be interdicted as we do not want to condone criminal activities. Any police who misconducts him or herself will be dealt with just as we will to civilians,” he warned.
ACP Duku said the incident took place last Wednesday, April 29, 2015, when the suspect was on duty with other officers at the Santasi Roundabout.
He said the police stopped a vehicle with a Chinese, Wei Heiming and his girlfriend on board and a search on the vehicle revealed nothing, but when Heiming restarted his journey, he realised that his iphone6, which was in the car was missing.
On May 1, the police said, the Chinese went to the roundabout, located the police patrol team and approached Constable Sarpong who searched the car, and enquired of the phone but he denied knowledge of it.
According to ACP Duku, the Chinese, dissatisfied, contacted a District Police Commander friend, who initimated investigations during which Constable Sarpong confessed taking the mobile device from the vehicle that night and giving it to a dealer to sell it for him.
The device worth about GH¢4,000, according to ACP Duku, had been retrieved and from the dealer would be used as evidence during the prosecution.
