Cop Held Over Illegal Chainsaw Business

A policeman who allegedly engaged in illegal chainsaw activities in the Atiwa forest in the Bosome Freho District has been arrested by the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area.

The DCE, Kwame Adarkwa, was in the company of some task force members when he made the arrest at dawn on Tuesday.

He managed to disarm the policeman of his AK 47 assault rifle and handed him over to the Atiwa Police, together with a KIA truck loaded with beams and logs.

Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Thomas Owoahene Acheampong, the Bekwai District Police Commander , who is handling the case, confirmed the arrest to The Ghanaian Times, but declined to disclose the identity of the policeman.

According to the DCE, illegal chainsaw activities have become rampant in the area and so a taskforce was formed to monitor and flush out the miscreants.

He said the policeman and his team operated in the night, armed with an assault rifle and under the pretext of being a forestry official.

The task force members spotted the KIA truck in the forest and suspected some fishy deal and informed him.

“On our way to the forest, we met the KIA truck, fully loaded with beams and logs”, he noted and said the policeman initially told him that he was a forestry officer but it was later realised that he was a policeman.
