Committee to probe sinking of vessel

IMG_0650A six-member committee established to investigate the circumstances that led to the sinking of the OK fishing vessel, in the Ivorian waters last November, was inaugurated in Accra yesterday.

It has Captain Eric Adu, as the chairman; with Captain Inusah A. Nasir, Mr. Christian Nii Amponsah, Ms. Matilda Quist, Ms. Serwah Abena Asante and a representative of the National Security Council, as members.

The committee, among other things, would find out the reasons why the vessel was sank, despite it having the required licence to operate on the waters.

Addressing the committee, Ms. Sherry Hanny Ayittey, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said the incident occurred in the Ivorian waters and the vessel made a distress call to the Ivorian Navy for rescue.

She said the ministry, therefore, asked the Ivorian Navy to step in and rescue the crew on board, and they were later brought to Accra for treatment.

She noted that such incident had occurred three times 2013, 2014 and 2015 rendering a huge cost to the owners of the vessels.
