Collapsed building kills one, injures 12

SONY DSCOne person died when a building said to be a restaurant under construction near Akai House at Cantonments, Accra, collapsed on Saturday night.

The Director of Police Public Affairs, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Cephas Arthur, told The Ghanaian Times on phone that 12 people were rescued and immediately sent to the Police and the 37 Military Hospitals for treatment.

He said six of them were treated and discharged at the Military Hospital, while five others were discharged at the Police Hospital, where one was still on admission.

Narrating the incident, DSP Arthur said, the Police received a distress call at about 11 30: pm of a collapsed storey building which was under construction.

He said, some personnel were immediately dispatched to the place and with the support from the military, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ambulance Service, those trapped were rescued.

According to DSP Arthur, the victims were then working in the night when the building collapsed on them.

He commended Menbanha and Souse Construction Company, for releasing heavy duty equipment and personnel to assist in the rescue operation.

DSP Arthur said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary while investigations into the incident had commenced.
