The Kumasi Circuit Court has slapped a five-year jail sentence in hard labour on 32-year-old district manager of Adwu-mapa Cocoa Buyers Company Limited for stealing 894 bags of cocoa beans worth GH¢189, 528.00 belonging to the company.
Louis Adjei, pleaded guilty to stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of Act 29/60 of the Criminal Code, and the court, presided over by Miss Afia Adu Amankwah, sentenced him on his own plea.
Prosecuting, Chief Superintendent, Emmanuel Akonnor, said the complainant was a sector manager of Adwumapa cocoa Buyers Company at Abinkyi in Kumasi, and Adjei, the district manager of Bibiani, in the Western Region.
During the 2013 and 2014 cocoa season, the prosecutor said, Louis was given GH¢879, 800.00 with which to purchase 4,150 bags of cocoa.
Adjei bought 3,256 bags of cocoa valued at GH¢690,272.00 with 894 bags valued at GH¢189,528.00, outstanding.
On January 17, 2014, the prosecution said, the complainant visited Adjei at Bibiani and found 315 sealed and 278 unsealed bags of cocoa inside the depot.
Chief Supt. Akonnor said on January 21, 2014, the complainant again visited the accused’s depot only to find out that the 315 sealed and 278 unsealed bags of cocoa beans had been sold by Adjei.
The complainant,arrested and handed him over to the police for investigations during which he admitted in his caution statement that he could not locate the 894 bags of cocoa beans.
Adjei was consequently char-ged and put before the court.
