Cobbler Jailed 18yrs For Robbery

Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood — Chief JusticeThe Accra Fast Track High Court Division Four, yesterday sentenced a cobbler to 18 years imprisonment in hard labour, for robbing a policeman.

Sannie Iddrisu, pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted accordingly.

Prosecuting, State Attorney Mr. Ashong Okai, told the court presided over by Justice Mustapha Habib Logoh, that the victim was a policeman with the Panthers Unit and student of the University of Ghana.

He said on November 6, 2009, at about 6:30 p.m., he was going on official duty after lectures at the Accra City Campus, and on reaching the Ako Adjei interchange, the convict appeared from nowhere and hit him with an implement, and rendered him unconscious.

Victim’s screams drew the attention of a private security officer on duty in an adjacent bungalow, and he came to his rescue and saw the convict holding a bag belonging to him.

But convict took to his heels when he realised the security officer and others were approaching the scene.

The security officer and others chased and arrested him near the British High Commission.

They made him to open the bag and they found a police uniform, a tin of peak milk and a mobile phone, all belonging to the victim, in it.

He was handed over to the Osu police.

Passing sentence, Mr. Logoh said the court was being lenient with the convict, because he had been in custody since 2009, was a young man and a first time offender. By Malik Sullemana
