Civil Engineer, 42, states claim to UE NPP

A 43-year old Civil Engineer, Filson Awankua, has declared his intention to contest for the Upper East Regional Chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) scheduled to take place this year.

Mr. Awankua who expressed worry at the few Parliamentary seats won by the party at the last election, stated that when given the nod he would put measures in place to win more seats for the party.

Interacting with the media in Bolgatanga on Saturday to announce his decision, the aspirant pledged to give the governing party victory in the 2020 general elections.

According to him one of the major problems confronting the party in the region was disunity and petty squabble among some members of the party and promised to work hard to unite the party’s rank and file.

“My focus is to build vibrant and formidable party structures at the polling station, constituency and regional levels to win power,” he stressed.

Whilst indicating that he had been serving the party in various capacities since 1994, the aspiring chairman said he had built huge networks nationwide and beyond and was also approachable.

“I have served in various positions of the NPP since 1994 including the leadership of the Tertiary Education Students Confederation (TESCON), National Youth Coordinator as well as working with the past presidential candidates of the party.”

He said as part of his contributions to the party, he mobilised and raised funding to support the party activities during the last electioneering campaign.

“I am contesting this race to serve and not to lord it over members and supporters of the party. I will work with everybody by   continuing  the good works of the late Adam Mahama, the former Regional Chairman of the party, to ensure that the party won both the parliamentary and presidential slots in the forthcoming 2020 general election,” he indicated.

Dr Akamboe Ayirebasia, an elder of the party and former lecturer of the Bolgatanga Polytechnic, noted that his experience with the aspirant confirmed that he was a man of integrity who could make bigger impact for the party if given the leadership mantle.

Mr. Philip Aboro, former Regional Youth Organiser of the party  stated that the party needed young ,  vibrant and experienced person like Mr  Awankua to lead the party to victory and appealed to the party’s delegates to endorse the aspirants who possessed the qualities needed in that office.
