CID probes AIDS Ambassador

The Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday launched investigations into the claims of the former AIDS Ambassador that she had never been HIV positive.

Ms. Dzidzor Mensah the ex-AIDS Ambassador, was questioned yesterday at the CID Headquarters and released on bail.

The investigations were to authenticate the HIV status of Ms. Mensah, which has been a bone of contention between her and the Ghana AIDS Commission.

According to the CID, the investigations followed complaints lodged by the Commission against Ms. Mensah, who it engaged as an Ambassador based on her positive HIV status, but recently announced that she lied of being HIV positive.

Assistant Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwa, the Public Relations Officer of the CID told The Ghanaian Times that, Ms. Mensah was invited to assist with investigations.

He said all relevant information are being gathered in the case, adding that if it became necessary, the CID would have an HIV test conducted on Ms. Mensah to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the story.

He said if the investigations established that Ms. Mensah was truly not HIV positive, she could be held liable for deceit of public officer.

Ms. Mensah surprised Ghanaians in the latter part of last year when she announced that she was HIV negative, and that she lied to the AIDS Commission in order to become an ambassador to save lives.

This development led to the public to question the due diligence conducted by the Commission in appointing its Ambassadors. But the Commission refuted accusation of negligence, insisting that it satisfied itself that Ms. Mensah was HIV positive before granting her the ambassadorial status.
