The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) will stage a special boxing championship to honour the memory of the its medical officer, Dr. Daniel Carl Sonne, tonight at his residence at Osu.
Dr. Sonne, affectionately known as Nii Carl passed on at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Monday, March 9 at the age of 75, leaving behind a daughter, Barbara Krisztina Chikan-Sonne.
He was an integral member of Ghana’s boxing sanctioning body and played lead roles in a number of the top promotions held in the country.
He will be buried tomorrow at the Osu Cemetery after burial service at the Osu Eben-Ezer Presbyterian Church at 10am.
But tonight at his residence, H/NO. F377/2, Joel Sonne Street, near the Osu Police Station, the GBA will assemble top boxers from the various boxing gyms to fight in honour of him.
According to Alhaji Tofiq, an Executive Member of the GBA, this evening’s event dubbed ‘Carl Sonne Memorial boxing’ will witness professional and amateur bouts.
“A number of these boxers have at one time in their careers gone for his service and it is appropriate we do this to pay our last respect to him. He was a true lover of the sport,” Alhaji Tofiq told the Times Sports yesterday.
