Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2016 election, has cautioned aspirants of the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries to desist from using his name to solicit support from delegates.
He has urged the candidates to campaign on their own strength and merit, and pledged to support those who would emerge winners at the end of the contest.
Nana Akufo-Addo’s concerns were disclosed by his spokesperson, Mustapha Hamid, in an interview with Citi News in Accra on Monday.
This followed reports emerging that some aspirants had made claims that Nana Addo was purportedly supporting them in their campaign.
The spokesperson stressed that Nana Akufo-Addo was concerned about the matter because as a flagbearer he was looking for persons “who can win seats for us to obtain a majority in Parliament. “
Mr Hamid said, “Nana Akufo Addo is not sponsoring any particular candidate to contest parliamentary seats.”
The spokesperson asked party delegates to discount claims by some aspirants that Nana Akufo-Addo was backing them.
