CAF Shortlists Gyan, Asamoah

2013 AFCON - Ghana v Congo DRGhana duo of striker Asamoah Gyan and midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah have been named in CAF’s shortlist for this year’s African Footballer of the Year award.

The two key Black Stars are the only Ghanaians in the 25-man shortlist drawn by the continent’s governing body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the top award. CAF unveiled the 25-man shortlist for the prize of African Footballer of the Year for 2013, with Ivorian stars Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba the leading names.

Gyan, who plies his trade in the UAE with Al Ain, is the league’s best player and top scorer after clinching the top scorers award last term. The striker has played exceptionally well this year. Gyan scored six goals for his country in their World Cup qualification campaign and received considerable attention for his performance. Asamoah put up solid performances for Juventus in the Serie A and the UEFA Champions League which many think merits the award.

They face stiff competition from John Mikel Obi, Jonathan Pitriopa, Yao Kouassi Gervais ‘Gervinho’and reigning African Player of the Year Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast. Manchester City midfielder Toure has won the award in each of the last two years and winning it for a third consecutive year would see him match the achievement of Samuel Eto’o, winner in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Eto’o, now of Chelsea, has won the award four times overall but is not nominated this time.

Two-time winner Drogba, now of Galatasaray, and Gervinho of Roma are the other candidates from the Ivory Coast, while there are five Nigerians in contention, all members of the side that won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa at the start of the year. The winners will be announced at the Glo-CAF Awards Gala scheduled for Thursday, January 9, 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria.
