Bushfire destroys Kalakpa Game Reserve

DSC_8031PORTIONS of the Eastern Corridor Road which runs through Adaklu-Kpetsu, in the Adaklu District of the Volta Region, were on Friday strewn with a large number of dead and injured glasscutters, causing disruption to vehicular movement.

The animals were fleeing a late afternoon bush fire in the nearby Kalakpa Game Reserve.

The fire caused extensive damage to the reserve which is 18 kilometres from Ho.

It was quite a scene seeing some local residents trooping onto the road to collect the rodents.

Some motorists also parked their vehicles and joined the collection spree.

The fire comes barely 48 hours after the MP of area, Mr. Kwame Agbodza, appealed to the people to desist from the annual ritual of setting fire to the bush.

The Ghanaian Times carried a GNA story on Saturday, in which the MP was reported as saying that he would reward communities which do not experience any bush fires, this year.

When contacted, the District Chief Executive, Mr. Emmanuel Sky Ganaku, said that the assembly had mounted a search for the arsonists, adding that “We have taken a firm stance to deal ruthlessly who those who cause bush fires”.
