A two time former Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier-General (Rtd) Joseph Nunoo- Mensah, has urged African leaders to make sacrifices their hallmark as it is the surest way to dealing with the growing challenges of the 21st century.

He pointed out that leadership in many parts of the sub-region had become bland because persons who assume leadership roles especially in government had turned away from sacrificing for their followers.

Brig-Gen(rtd) Nunoo-Mensah was speaking on the topic, ‘Price of authentic leadership’ when he took his turn on the second edition of the leading July series, an annual leadership programme that taps into the experiences to build positive conscience among the youth and the public at large with the hope of promoting transformational leadership.

Speaking on how authentic leadership can transform the lives of African people, he indicated that African leaders are not able to accomplish why they are made leaders  because they are very “selfish,” citing amassing of wealth through questionable means thereby missing the opportunity to leave legacies.

Brig-Gen (rtd) Nunoo-Mensah noted that Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah and South Africa’s anti-apartheid crusader, Nelson Mandela were leaders who left their comfort zones to sacrifice for their followers and urged leaders to emulate their ways of life.

He entreated persons in leadership to be purposeful and work according to their mission, be extraordinary, courageous and disciplined.

According to him, leaders must live exemplary lives built on modesty and desist from being self-seekers.
