Boy drowns in Newmont dam

AN 18-year-old boy, identified as Issaka, was last Friday evening reported drowned in one of Newmont’s dams at Damso, a village in the enclave of Newmont Ahafo Mines in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

A community member, Abisa Yakubu who made this known to The Ghanaian Times said, Issaka went to swim in the dam but got drowned.

A search party to rescue him abandoned the assignment, until the following day, when it retrieved the body.

The Brong-Ahafo Regional Crime Officer, Alhaji Maama Arhin, confirmed the story and said the police were investigating and would soon come out with their report.

Mr. Kwame Agbeko Azuma, the Public Relations Officer of Newmont Ahafo Mines, also confirmed the incident and stated that the Security Control Centre of the company received a call about the incident about 7 p.m. on Friday and immediately dispatched an emergency team to the scene to assist rescue the boy.

He said the matter was later reported to the police and added that the company, would soon issue a statement on the incident and thereafter, meet with the deceased’s family.
