The Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on Friday arrested the Managing Director of a quarry company in connection with leaked pictures on social media.
The pictures show vehicles allegedly meant for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) being branded with party colours of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr. Edmund Ayo Ani, Managing Director of Marbles and Granites at Spintex in Accra, was arrested by the BNI on the orders of the National Security Advisor, Alhaji Baba Kamara.
Nana Adjei Baffuor, his lawyer confirmed to Joy FM’s Newsfile on Saturday that Dr. Ani and two other securitymen were arrested while he was at work.
They were picked up by personnel from the Police SWAT team and taken to the Cantoments Police Station.
Dr. Ani is being accused of leaking some pictures, his lawyer said.
The pictures, which have gone viral on social media showed at least 50 Mahindra 4×4 vehicles being sprayed in NDC colours at a mechanic shop near his office on the Spintex Road.
It has sparked another round of what some view as an abuse of office and incumbency ahead of the general elections in November.
The compound where the Mahindra vehicles were kept for spraying, shared a wall with the quarry company. Considering the angles the pictures were taken, it is being inferred that the photos were captured from Dr. Ani’s company.
The police invited Dr. Ani demanding that he completed a standard bio-data form, which he insisted otherwise, demanding rather to know what his crime was. He also refused to change into a cell attire.
Following his refusal, BNI officials picked him up from the police station.
A Chinese woman who works with Dr Ani was also picked up.
“What is their crime?” bemused veteran journalist Kweku Baako asked as the story broke during the news analysis show.
The yard where the vehicles were being kept, belongs to a top security official in government, whose name had not been made public yet. The vehicles were also moved away from the location on Saturday dawn.
Meanwhile, the National Security Advisor, Alhaji Baba Kamara, has confirmed to Joy News he ordered the arrest of Dr. Ani.
Alhaji Kamara told Joy News that the yard on which the Mahindra vehicles were parked was his property, and it was not right for Dr. Ani to take any pictures, make them viral, and accused him of rebranding National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) pick-up 4X4 trucks as National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign vehicles.
He said it was wrong for Dr.Ani to take pictures of somebody’s yard.
The National Security Advisor said he would drag Dr. Ani before the court, to explain why he took those pictures.
Also, he would want an explanation from Dr. Ani on where he got the information that the vehicles were NCCE property which had been branded in NDC colours.
