Blind man commits suicide

Mobila Yanam, a blind man who was divorced by his wife, has committed suicide.

Mobila, believed to be in his 40s, had made two earlier attempts to commit suicide.

In the first attempt three years ago, he was alleged to have drunk some chemicals.

After receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), he was made to sign an undertaking not to attempt suicide again.

Notwithstanding his pledge, Mobila, who had lived in the area behind the Ridge Police Station close to the ECG Sub-station in Kumasi for years, hanged himself on a mango tree with a piece of cloth last Sunday morning.

According to Bobila Yanam, his brother, Mobila’s second attempt at suicide occurred when a quarrel ensued between him and his wife as a result of accusations and counter-accusations of infidelity.

Bobila Yanam said this resulted in the married couple separating about four years ago.

He said the woman left to her hometown with one of their children, while Yanam stayed with the other child.

Bobila Yanam said about three years ago, Mobila drank a poisonous substance, but some neighbours rushed him to hospital, after which he was made to sign the bond to be of good behaviour.

He said months after that treatment, he again drank some substance to end his life and was rushed to KATH.

The doctors did their best to save his life, but he lost his sight in the process.

Bobila said he was counselled not to attempt suicide again, but last Sunday, when he went to visit him, to give him money for his upkeep, he was not present.

He later found the lifeless body hanging from a mango tree naked, and he reported to the police who conveyed the body to the hospital’s morgue.
