Liberty Professionals dimunitive striker, Latif Blessing is expected to sweep top awards at tonight’s Premier League Board (PLB) awards night where the ‘crème de la crème’ of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League (GPL) would be awarded for their impressive performances in the year under review.
This year’s edition to be held at the Banquet Hall, State House will see the Liberty striker win the Goal King award after scoring 17 goals for the Dansoman club.
He is tipped to add the flagship Footballer of the Season award but would have to overcome competition from Medeama’s defensive midfielder, Kwesi Donsu and Abdul Bashiru from Dreams FC.
Despite the impressive performance from the trio, none plays for the eventual winners, Wa All Stars, whose display appears to have overshadowed them but Blessing’s goal prowess will be too inviting to ignore.
The event will not be spared of the Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko rivalry as Inusah Musah and Amos Frimpong clash for honours in the Best Defender of the Season category where Dreams FC’s Abdul Bashiru will be eyeing an upset.
Medeama’s Enoch Atta Agyei continued with the fine form that saw him being adjudged the Most Promising Player in the 2015/16 Division One League (DOL).
That brightened his chances of earning a place in the Medeama squad and after just a season, the player currently plying his trade in Tanzania has been nominated together Abdul Alidu Hudu from Inter Allies and New Edubiase’s Mohammed Tarfik for the Most Promising Player of the Season award.
Wa All Stars goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, is also in pole position to win the Goalkeeper of the Season award in a category that also features Aduana Stars’ Joseph Addo and Razak Abalora from the WAFA Academy.
It appears a night for the champions as Enos Adipa and S. Oduro-Nyarko, Head Coach and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) respectively of Wa All Stars are lined up in the Coach of the Season and CEO of the Season award categories.
Both are favourites in their respective categories judging by the success chalked with Chioba Aristica of Aduana Stars and Zacharis Manuel of Bechem as well as Medeama’s James Essilfie and Albert Commey of Medeama, all expected to provide a cosmetic challenge.
The Referee of the Season award category could provide a sterner test for the selectors as SB Bortey, Daniel Laryea and Awal Mohammed contend for the award just as Richard Appiah, David Agyin and Haruna Bawa battle for the Best Assistant Referee of the Season award.
The Match Commissioner of the Season award would be contested by Augustine Asante, Lacomba Andrew Dery and Charles Amankwah with Paul Agbenyagah, Ohene Agyei and Emmanuel Offei also gunning for the Cameraman of the Season award.
This year’s event is under the distinguished patronage of two of Ghana’s illustrious and highly respected citizens, His Excellency Maj. (Rtd) Amarkai Amarteifio, ex PNDC Secretary for Youth and Sports, who will chair the event. The Special Guest of Honour is His Lordship Justice Anin Yeboah, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana who has extended his judicial prowess on various judicial bodies at both CAF and FIFA.
The two come with a combined wealth of knowledge on sports/administrative justice.
The highlight of the show will be a special award dedicated to Mr. Welbeck Yaw Abra-Appiah, the immediate past PLB Chairman, who joined the PLB in 1998 as Vice and took over the chairmanship years later till 2015.
