Black Sticks prepare for FIH series

Peter AnnanThe national women’s hockey team, the Black Sticks have stepped up preparations ahead of their participation in the second round of the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) World League Series scheduled for New Delhi, India from March 7 – 15.

The team which started camping in January have moved into the second and final phase of their preparations at the national hockey pitch to put them in good condition for the huge task ahead in India. Ghana participated in the first round of the World League Tournament, which was hosted by Kenya in September last year and was able to progress to the second round.

The World League, is a four leg qualifying series for the Hockey World Cup.

The Ghanaian female team is in the tournament together with countries such as hosts India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Singapore and Thailand.

According to Mr. Kenaz Mensah, Secretary General of the Ghana Hockey Association (GHA), a contingent of 24 including 18 players, four officials, an officiating official and a medical officer will leave Accra on March 2 for the tournament.

The GHA, he said, would ensure Ghana hockey gets to the highest level by making frantic efforts to reach out to corporate Ghana to support the dream to become African Champions and a reputable force in world hockey.
