Black Starlets overcome Togo

Ghana’s Black Starlets qualified to the semi-final of the African U-17 zonal qualifiers after beating Togo 2-1 in Niamey on Saturday.

Simon Appiah converted an 85th minute penalty to give Karim Zito’s side victory at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché.

Having drawn with the hosts, Niger in the group opener, the Starlets took the lead through Christian Agyenim Boateng in the 42nd minute when he shrugged off a challenge from his marker to slot past the goalkeeper.

But the celebration lasted for just two minutes as the Togolese leveled through a brilliant effort.

The result means the Black Starlets finished top of Group A with four points from two matches.

Sources from the team’s camp have indicated that Ghana may play their fierce rivals, Nigeria in a tough semi final clash on Wednesday.

With the new format introduced by the Confederation of African Football, only the victorious country will qualify from the mini tournament to represent the zone at the Africa U-17 championship to be held in Tanzania where Africa’s representatives for the FIFA U-17 World Cup will be selected. –Ghanasoccernet
