Birthday boy sends Real Madrid on top

Birthday boy Alvaro Morata scored the late winner as Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao to go top of La Liga in the rain at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Morata celebrated his 24th birthday and was given the perfect present by Gareth Bale who crossed from the left with just six minutes left giving the substitute the chance to net the winner.

Gorka Iraizoz blocked Morata’s first effort but then fell back on the ball and as it squirmed out from beneath him the forward followed in to make sure.

Athletic Bilbao came into the game having not won at the Bernabeu for 11 years and it did not start well for them.

Marcelo’s crossfield pass was excellent but it ran away from Isco with Athletic left-back Enric Saborit looking to have the situation under control.

But he gifted the ball back to Isco inside the area and when the Real Madrid midfielder rolled the ball to Karim Benzema he finished past Gorka Iraizoz.

Madrid were causing problems every time they attacked with Marcelo and Dani Carvajal both getting forward.

But Athletic were also making chances.

Inaki Williams had fizzed a shot goalwards that Keylor Navas palmed away and Sabin Merino sent a header over.

It was the 24-year-old striker, in the team for the injured Aritz Aduriz, who equalised.
